Pre-Conception panel

Our pre-conception panel has three components – for carrier screening, for sexually transmitted diseases and for conditions that can affect conception. The carrier screening tests identify the presence of a genetic disorder in the couple and can provide an indication of risk of their child having the genetic disorder. The sexually transmitted diseases are tested to identify if either individual in the couple is infected. The panel also screens for common disorders in the couple that may affect conception so that the necessary precautions can be taken well in advance

Carrier screening
Test Code Test name and Information (one sentence only) Clinical Significance of the Test in Clinical Practice Method
MPA007 Alpha Thalassemia Testing (HBA1 and HBA2: 7 Deletions;-α3.7, -α4.2, -(α)20.5, --SEA, --MED, --FIL, --THAI) Diagnosis of alpha-thalassemia. Carrier screening for individuals from high risk populations. Confirm a clinical diagnosis of Hb Bart hydrops fetalis syndrome or hemoglobin H (HbH) disease/td> Multiplex PCR
MPB018 Beta Thalassemia Five common Mutation To confirm the diagnosis of a beta thalassemia or beta globinopathy especially when a definitive diagnosis cannot be made by HPLC or gel electrophoresis. For clinical symptoms of a hemoglobinopathy. For a positive family history of a beta thalassemia or hemoglobinopathy. To confirm a specific beta globin mutation in parents, prior to prenatal diagnosis.Prenatal diagnosis of beta globin mutations previously documented in parents. ARMS PCR
MPS010 Carrier screening-Sickle Cell Disease Screening for hemoglobin S (sickle cell trait) PCR
Carrier screening-cystic fibrosis Carrier screening for individuals with family history PCR RFLP
CBC Pre conception Screening to check for thallesemia or sickle cell trait or any other abnormal haemoglobinopathy Automated cell counter, microscopy
HIV 1 & 2 For detection of antibodies to HIV-1 & HIV-2 Rapid solid phase immunocchromatographic test
HbsAg-Qualitative For detection of Hepatitis B surface antigen leading to diagnosis of hepatits Rapid solid phase immunocchromatographic test
HCV For detection of antibodies to Hepatitis C infection Rapid solid phase immunocchromatographic test
Thyroid function tests For diagnosing thyroid disorders CLIA
SEMEN ANALYSIS A sperm analysis is often recommended when couples are having problems getting pregnant. The test will help a doctor determine if a man is infertile. The analysis will also help determine if low sperm count or sperm dysfunction is the reason behind infertility. Men who have had a vasectomy undergo semen analysis to make sure no sperm are in their semen. Biochemistry and microscopy
Abnormal Haemoglobin Pre conception Screening to check for thallesemia or sickle cell trait or any other abnormal haemoglobinopathy HPLC
VDRL For detection of syphilis Rapid solid phase immunocchromatographic test
